An ongoing list of titles for which I've completed a write-up, i.e. held a club meeting. Have I stretched this metaphor thinly enough yet? My initial plan is to sort these by publish date, though as the list expands, I may add sort functionality. I've also added a "Category" column which is entirely unofficial, but a way that I've found helpful to delineate these games as I tackle them. For reference, here's how I plan to break them down for the foreseeable future:
-
Classic: games strictly released before Half-Life's release on November 19, 1998. This is a completely arbitrary cut-off date. There are plenty of games that folks would argue are classic entries to the genre (good and bad) that released after 11/19/98. However, I'm choosing to stick with this cut-off because I think it'll be interesting to observe what kind of fall-off there is, if any, of entries after this date (compared to the drastic uptick that will likely be seen post-DOOM 2016's release).
-
WAD: a general term for any level packs and conversion mods that evolved out of the DOOM II modding scene in the 90s and continues today, though I'll use the label for any game that fits the general mold instead of only using it for DOOM II WADs.
-
Throwback: two parts to the criteria here. First, the game must have released after Half-Life's release on November 19, 1998. Still an arbitrary date, but it's what I'm sticking with for now. Second, the game must either be made in one of the classic boomer shooter engines (id Tech / Doom engine, Quake engine, Build engine), or be aesthetically / technically similar enough to a game built in these engines that a layman would not be able to discern the difference. By my definition, DUSK would be considered a Throwback. Post Void would not be.
-
Other: a catch-all for anything that I would consider a boomer shooter that doesn't fall under my (admittedly tenuous) definition of a "Throwback." Likely either developed in a different engine, or deviates far enough from the classic style that it feels less like a throwback, but still harkens back to the era enough that it's worth being considered in the blossoming sphere of boomer shooters.
Again, my categorization should be taken with several grains of salt. It is meaningless outside of the confines of this blog, and serves only as a means for me to mentally sort these as I play through them.
